Significant Increase Of Attempted Northern Border Crossings

Recent figures from federal law enforcement showed a significant spike in attempted crossings from Canada last month. The figures come as there has been some progress in reducing attempted entry into the country by illegal aliens due to the efforts of the state of Texas.

One border sector between the United States and Canada saw more than 3,000 migrants arrested, which set a new record.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials, the Swanton Sector of the border arrested the migrants in May. The sector includes parts of New York, Vermont and New Hampshire. It also represents a greater total than previous annual figures prior to President Joe Biden taking office.

The sector has seen more than 10,000 apprehensions so far this year, which is already higher than the total number from last year. The 2023 total of almost 7,000 migrants was itself a record.

Texas has long been one of the focal points of attempted illegal alien crossings. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has long been a significant critic of Biden and his border policies.

The governor launched Operation Lone Star to use Texas resources to prevent illegal crossings from Mexico. This includes utilizing the state’s police and National Guard.

The state placed a series of border barriers along or near the Rio Grande, including razor wire and floating buoys. The actions were challenged by the Biden administration in court.

During an event near the border with former President Donald Trump earlier this year, Abbott stated that Operation Lone Star significantly reduced the crossings into the state.

However, the decline in crossings into Texas also came as many migrants now attempt to enter the country through Arizona and California.

More than seven million illegal aliens are estimated to have entered the country since Biden took office in 2021. This includes more than three million attempted entries last year, which set a new record. December 2023 also saw more than 300,000 attempted crossings, which set a new monthly record.
