Group wrongly claims Virgin Mary supports their cause

A disturbing social media controversy erupted Sunday when “Catholics for Choice,” a non-profit organization, posted a message on X suggesting the Virgin Mary had abortion as an option. The post declared, “This holiday season, remember that Mary had a choice, and you should, too.”

The platform’s users swiftly condemned the misleading message, with X’s Community Note system providing clarification: “The Catholic Church teaches that Mary gave her free and informed ‘yes’ to God’s plan to bear Jesus, a decision made »before« His conception.”

The organization, which claims to “encounter, educate, and embolden people of faith who support reproductive freedom,” demonstrated a fundamental misunderstanding of its own argument, as Mary’s consent preceded conception.

This misleading self-identification mirrors historical examples of deceptive naming. Much like the Holy Roman Empire’s inaccurate title or the Soviet Union’s false claim to republicanism, “Catholics for Choice” represents a similar contradiction in terms.

Contemporary discourse has witnessed comparable linguistic inversions, from phrases like “mostly peaceful” to “follow the science.” From a Christian perspective, this organization’s name could be likened to “Sheep for Wolves.”

The appropriate response to such provocative messaging involves both acknowledging its absurdity and offering sincere prayers for those involved, while remaining mindful of our own moral vulnerabilities. Such an approach helps transform even the darkest moments into opportunities for divine light to emerge.
