Ukraine Claims Effective Strike on Russian Oil Depot

UKRAINE Strikes RUSSIAN OIL Depot

On Sunday, Ukraine announced that it had attacked a southern Russian oil depot that serves Kremlin soldiers, killing five and injuring fifteen.

The Ukrainian General Staff said Kyiv’s security services carried out the morning drone strike in southern Kursk, Russia. The Russian military’s oil storage, which has 11 tanks totaling 7,000 cubic meters (247,202 cubic feet), caused “powerful explosions and a fire… probably involving containers with oil products.”

As stated, “the defense forces continue to take all necessary actions to undermine the Russian occupiers’ military and economic potential and force the Russian Federation to cease its armed aggression against Ukraine.”

According to a regional official and the Russian Defense Ministry, seven Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian territory overnight, setting the Kursk oil facility on fire. On Sunday morning, firefighters were fighting a fire in three gasoline tanks, according to Acting Regional Governor Alexey Smirnov. No one was hurt, said Smirnov.

The Kursk region borders Ukraine’s Sumy province, which has been attacking Russian oil depots and other military infrastructure with drones and other weapons in recent months. Ukrainian officials are pressuring their Western partners to let them use more modern weapons to hit more valuable targets in Russia.

On Sunday, Russian forces made minimal progress into Pokrovsk and Kurakhove in eastern Donetsk, Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry declared Prohres and Yevhenivka, two local settlements 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of Pokrovsk, under Russian military control on Sunday. Moscow seized adjacent Lozuvatske the day before, one of 12 villages it claims to have conquered this month in the province.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, driving millions to flee to neighboring countries. The Kremlin wants to dominate all of Donetsk, the nation’s industrial heartland still scarred by years of war.

After Russian strikes in Donetsk on Saturday and overnight, local governor Vadym Filashkin reported on Telegram on Sunday that five civilians had died and fifteen were wounded. Later, other Ukrainian officials stated that Russian bombardment had injured more civilians, including children, in the east and south.

Local governor Serhii Lysak reported Sunday that Moscow’s forces assaulted Nikopol, eastern Ukraine, hurting at least eight people. Lysak reported that six people, including a 10-year-old girl and a toddler, were hospitalized.

On Sunday, Russian shelling injured eight civilians in a village in southern Kherson, Ukraine, including two teenagers and a 10-year-old, according to local official Roman Mrochko.
