Trump Honors Slain NYPD Officer

Former President Donald Trump attended a memorial service for a slain member of the New York Police Department (NYPD) this week, setting up a sharp contrast with President Joe Biden. The president was also in New York State, attending a star-studded fundraiser with former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

The former president attended the wake of slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller after he was killed during a traffic stop. The former president spoke during an event, calling the homicide a “sad, sad event; such a horrible thing, and it’s happening all too often, and we’re just not going to let it happen.”

The suspect in the case had been arrested 21 times.

“The police are the greatest people we have; there’s nothing, and there’s nobody like them,” Trump said.

Trump reported that he met with Diller’s family and that the United States must bring back “law and order.” The president was greeted by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman (R) who said that the visit was “very comforting” to Diller’s family.

He added that people were “blessed to have someone like President Trump, who cared so much, spent a lot of time with the family, and was again, a tremendous comfort to the family in probably the most difficult time this family has ever had.”

Various groups have offered to help Diller’s family, including his one-year-old son Ryan. Blakeman said that the community would raise the body and that “he’s going to have thousands of dads that are gonna look after him.”

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which was set up to help families after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks promised to pay off Diller’s family’s mortgage. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports raised about $1.5 million for Diller’s family.

The Trump campaign criticized Biden for attending the fundraiser during Diller’s wake.

Trump 2024 Communications Director Steven Cheung said that the former president would be “honoring the life and legacy of Officer Diller and paying respects to his family, friends and the NYPD for their terrible loss, Meanwhile, the Three Stooges—Biden, Obama and Clinton—will be at a glitzy fundraiser in the city with their elitist, out-of-touch celebrity benefactors.”
