‘Squad’ Member Behind In Poll

A recent poll found that a member of the ‘Squad,’ a number of socialist members of the House of Representatives, is trailing a prospective Democratic primary challenger. Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) is reportedly trailing Wesley Bell in a recent Remington Research poll following the revelation that she allegedly used tens of thousands of dollars in taxpayer dollars to pay her husband for her own security.

According to the poll, Bell would receive 50% in such a matchup, which Bush brings in just 28% support. Another candidate, Maria Chapelle Nadal, had 4% support. The primary is set for Aug. 6.

Bush is currently under federal investigation for allegedly paying $60,000 in 2022 alone to her husband Cortney Merritts for security. Bush said that she had “endured relentless threats to my physical safety and life.”

She also said that she was “not entitled to personal protection by the House and instead have used campaign funds as permissible to retain security services. I have not used any federal tax dollars for personal security services. Any reporting that I have used federal funds for personal security is simply false.”

Despite the denial, the funds sent to Merritts are a matter of public record. Furthermore, Bush’s husband also does not hold a private security license needed to serve in such a role in St. Louis, Missouri. Furthermore, Merritts does not have such a license for work in the District of Columbia, either.

Bush would have been required under Federal Election Commission (FEC) rules to make such payments to family members only for “bona fide” services.

Bush paid out almost $500,000 for private security costs during her first term in office. This occurred despite the fact that Bush is one of the leading figures in the ‘Defund the Police’ movement.

“I’m going to make sure I have security because I know I have had attempts on my life and I have too much work to do,” Bush said in 2021. “So, if I end up spending $200,000, if I spend … 10 more dollars on it, you know what? I get to be here to do the work.”

Furthermore, Bush received considerable criticism for her approach to the current Middle East conflict, including siding with Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib (R-MI) in statements made against Israel’s actions.
