Throughout Israel’s recent diplomatic challenges, particularly since October 7, 2023, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman has emerged as a rare Democratic voice consistently supporting the Jewish state, even as backing from his party’s traditional Israel defenders has wavered.

During his second visit to Israel within a year, organized by Relief Resources, Fetterman toured the country via Black Hawk helicopter, met with hostage families and those who lost loved ones, and experienced Israeli culture. The senator and his wife Gisele also met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara before speaking with select journalists in Jerusalem about various aspects of the conflict.

Regarding potential military action against Iran, Fetterman expressed strong support for aggressive measures. “I don’t think you can really effectively negotiate with that regime,” he said, suggesting that using military force is the only option.

When asked if he would back U.S. involvement in such operations, he was direct: “Oh yeah. Blow it up! Blow it up! I think we should waste what’s left of their nuclear facilities.”

The senator voiced strong criticism of his party’s shifting stance on Israel, lamenting how some Democrats have distanced themselves from supporting the Jewish state. He suggested this position contributed to electoral setbacks, particularly in Michigan, where despite having a progressive Palestinian-American representative, voters turned to Trump.

Addressing the Palestinian Authority’s “Pay for Slay” policy, Fetterman responded forcefully. “That’s disgusting,” he told JNS. “I’ve read interviews where one of them, they’re like, ‘Hey, that’s controversial to stop paying people that kill innocent civilians.’ What’s wrong with you?”

The senator emphasized the importance of securing the release of remaining hostages and criticized fellow Democrats who seemed more focused on campus activists. He supported President Trump’s initiative to withhold federal funding from universities where anti-Israel protests have occurred, particularly at Columbia University.

Fetterman maintains strong support for Netanyahu, criticizing colleagues like Senator Chuck Schumer who refused to acknowledge the Israeli leader during a congressional address. During their recent meeting, Netanyahu presented Fetterman with a symbolic silver beeper, commemorating Israeli operations against terrorist leaders.

Addressing the progressive wing of his party, Fetterman acknowledged growing anti-Israel sentiment within left-wing movements. He highlighted contradictions in activist positions, referencing groups like “Queers for Palestine” while noting the reality of LGBTQ+ rights in Gaza.

Throughout the discussion, Fetterman remained resolute in his support for Israel, pledging to maintain his position even as others in his party drift away from supporting the Jewish state.
