Cheatle Resigns Following Munting Pressure

The drama surrounding the assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump took another dramatic turn on Tuesday when  U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced her resignation.

Cheatle has been under a lot of pressure following the assassination attempt on Trump, with many in the government —including Democrats— disapproving of her handling of the issue.

“To the Men and Women of the U.S. Secret Service, The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders and financial infrastructure,” Cheatle wrote in a letter to the agency. “On July 13th, we fell short on that mission. As your Director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse….. In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”

Cheatle wrote in her resignation letter that she does not want her resignation to distract from the Secret Service’s work.

President Joe Biden responded to Cheatle’s letter, thanking her for her years of public service.

“As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service,” Biden said. “We all know what happened that day can never happen again. As we move forward, I wish Kim all the best.”

The president added that a new Secret Service director will be appointed soon.

Cheatle’s resignation comes just one day after Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) announced on Monday that he filed articles of impeachment against her. The lawmaker cited Cheatle’s “unacceptable” handling of Trump’s assassination attempt as a reason for making the move.

“In light of Kimberly Cheatle’s unacceptable handling of the Trump assassination attempt, her disastrous appearance before the House Oversight committee today, and her refusal to resign, we have no choice but to impeach,” Steube wrote on X. “I will be filing articles of impeachment against Kimberly Cheatle this afternoon.”

Less than 24 hours before announcing her resignation, Cheatle appeared before lawmakers. The testimony got heated, with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) demanding House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) open a perjury investigation against Cheatle.
