US To Evacuate Americans From Haiti

The United States State Department announced last week that it would be evacuating Americans from Haiti as the country devolves into a state of anarchy. The news came after Washington evacuated personnel from the U.S. embassy in the country earlier this month and advised Americans not to travel to the Caribbean nation.

The State Department announced on social media that it was arranging a charter flight for American citizens to leave Haiti. The travel to the city of Cap-Haitien for evacuation would be “conducted at your own risk.”

The city with the evacuation flight is about 130 miles away from the capital of Port-au-Prince, which has been taken over by various gangs. The criminal syndicates have already shut down to of the country’s airports.

The country’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry, announced his resignation last week.

The nation has fallen into disarray after a large jailbreak earlier this year. One of the gang leaders, known as ‘Barbecue’ has threatened the country’s political leaders.

Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier said on social media that the country’s politicians had “taken the country where it is today. You have no idea what will happen.”

“I’ll know if your kids are in Haiti, if your wives are in Haiti … if your husbands are in Haiti,” he said. “If you’re gonna run the country all your family ought to be there.”

There have already been efforts by Haitians to flee their country for the United States. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) ordered a ship carrying the migrants to turn around earlier this month.

Haiti has seen several major cycles of violence and wars over the past century. The United States has been involved in several efforts to stabilize the country to varying degrees of success.

During one of the last major crises in the 1990s, thousands of Haitians fled to the United States. The Pentagon said in congressional testimony last week that it was preparing for a significant increase of migrants attempting to enter the country via boat from Haiti.
