Trump Receives Support From Key Donor

Prominent Republican donor Stephen Schwarzman announced this week that he would support former President Donald Trump just two years after saying he would oppose him. The announcement came as members of the GOP continue to fall in line behind the former president, including former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R).

“I share the concern of most Americans that our economic, immigration and foreign policies are taking the country in the wrong direction,” Schwarzman said.

Schwarzman has long been active in conservative circles, including serving on Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum.

“For these reasons, I am planning to vote for change and support Donald Trump for President. In addition, I will be supporting Republican Senate candidates and other Republicans up and down the ticket,” he added.

The billionaire also cited the “dramatic rise of antisemitism [which] has led me to focus on the consequences of upcoming elections with greater urgency.”

The donor is the co-founder of Blackstone, a private equity firm.

Despite the positive words this week, Schwarzman said in 2024 that the country “does better when its leaders are rooted in today and tomorrow, not today and yesterday,”

“It is time for the Republican Party to turn to a new generation of leaders and I intend to support one of them in the presidential primaries,” he added.

Schwarzman’s decision comes as Trump is gaining support both within the Republican Party and related organizations and in the general public. The former president is also gaining in a number of recent polls.

Haley represented one of the last major Republican officials who held out on an endorsement of Trump. The former governor came in second to Trump in the 2024 GOP primary and previously criticized the former president.

Despite this, the endorsement means that all major candidates from this year’s primary except for former Vice President Mike Pence now support Trump. He has received similar support from other Republican officials and donors since becoming the presumptive nominee earlier this year.
