NYPD Attack Suspects May Have Fled

Several of the suspects in the attack on members of the New York Police Department (NYPD) may have fled to California to escape trial. The possible flight happened in spite of having been arrested for the incident and the suspects’ illegal immigrant status.

Law enforcement received word that four of the men arrested following the attack may have fled New York for California. Police believe that the men gave a false name to board a one-way bus trip to the Golden State.

While the men have a projected court date, their flight makes it less likely that the hearing will happen.

The men were released without bail despite the violent nature of the crime following New York’s bail reform law. The law, which is criticized by many conservatives and some Democrats, has coincided with a significant increase in property and violent crime in the Empire State.

Last week’s attack left two NYPD officers wounded. Video from the incident showed the suspects punching and kicking the officers in the city’s famous Times Square.

Four men were nabbed by police after the melee, and three others were arrested after.

One of the suspects is accused of having previously “pushed, punched and bit” a department store employee after he was seen shoplifting. The same suspect allegedly punched an employee at another department store.

One of the suspects made an obscene gesture to reporters after his arrest.

New York has seen some of the worst effects of the large number of migrants who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border since President Joe Biden took office in 2021.

The flow increased significantly after Biden announced the end of the Title 42 asylum policy last year.

December 2023 represented the largest number of border encounters in U.S. history, topping 300,000 for the first time.

New York has taken in more than 170,000 migrants in the last two years, leading to substantial strain on the city’s resources and serious concerns about crime in the city.
