A Jordanian man’s bomb threat during a routine traffic stop led to an extensive shutdown of Interstate 85 near Greenville, South Carolina. The suspect, identified as Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi, caused significant disruption that required intervention from multiple law enforcement agencies.

The incident triggered an immediate response from local authorities, with the South Carolina Department of Transportation reporting major traffic congestion around Exit 44 at White Horse Road. The situation demanded a coordinated effort from Greenville County deputies, SLED bomb squad, and FBI personnel to address the potential threat.

Governor Henry McMaster addressed the situation, stating, “I-85 near mile marker 44 is temporarily closed out of an abundance of caution due to a bomb threat issued during a routine traffic stop this afternoon by SC Transport Police.” He further added, “SCDOT and state law enforcement are on the scene, and normal I-85 traffic will resume once the tractor trailer is swept and cleared by SELD’s bomb squad.”

Alhendi, 28, now faces serious legal consequences. His charges include breach of peace of a high and aggravated nature, making false bomb threats, and driving without a valid license. The court set his bond at $20,238 cash, according to local news outlet WYFF4.

Further complications arose when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placed a detainer on Alhendi. Investigation revealed that while he legally entered the United States in 2018, he had violated his admission terms. His immigration status is now in jeopardy, with deportation proceedings scheduled for August 2026.
