Johnson Calls For Supreme Court To Overturn Trump Decision

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) defended former President Donald Trump following his conviction by a New York jury. The speaker’s comments came after the former president said that he would appeal the decision.

“I do believe the Supreme Court should step in, obviously, this is totally unprecedented, and it’s dangerous to our system,” he said Friday.

“We’ve all discussed this before, and y’all talk about it all the time — this is diminishing the American people’s faith in our system of justice itself,” Johnson said to Fox News.

“I think they’ll set this straight, but it’s going to take a while,” Johnson said.

“The process takes a while to play out,” he added.

The speaker also said that the former president’s prosecutors “just want to bankrupt Donald Trump.”

“They want to diminish his credibility and go after his character. They wanted to keep him off the campaign trail, which they were successful in doing for many weeks, and now they want to call him the convicted felon,” he said.

The speaker said that the “double standard is here.”

Trump also spoke on Friday morning at a press event. The former president said that the case against him was “rigged.” He called Judge Juan Merchan “conflicted.”

The former president also said that the case against him was inappropriate and passed over by several agencies until picked up by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D). Trump also said that he was advised not to testify in the case, although he wanted to.

The former president also accused Bragg of having said that he wanted to “get Trump” prior to the prosecution.

Despite the conviction, Trump cited positive poll numbers for his campaign. He also said that he was well ahead of President Joe Biden.

Separately, the Trump campaign announced a significant increase in fundraising following the announcement of the conviction. Many Republican members of Congress condemned the decision.

Trump denies any wrongdoing in the case, which allegedly involved payments to a former adult film actress.
