Heat Wave Forecast for Maine: Scorching Temperatures Expected

Historic Heat Wave Alert in Main

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Summer is about to show up in a big way in New England this weekend for Fourth of July celebrations. Heat advisories were in effect in Caribou and other areas of the state where temperatures were poised to approach records, the National Weather Service said.

Weather Forecast: The FOX Forecast Center reports that high pressure is fueling extreme heat across the eastern United States. The heat wave will send temperatures to the 80s and 90s through parts of Maine, values that represent a significant departure from the region’s average summer temperatures. This is a historic event for Caribou, which typically doesn’t see the kind of heat.

Impacts & Precautions: The lengthy duration of the heat wave will create dangerous conditions. People are encouraged to stay hydrated, not work or exercise outside during the hottest hours, and keep a watchful eye on elderly family members, young children, and pets. If you can, turn on fans and air conditioning, shutting the windows to keep the cool air inside.

Cooling centers from local authorities will also be open for those who do not have air conditioning to use. Among other things, these centers provide a cool venue to get out of the heat and use the bathroom, and are particularly intended to provide relief for people at additional risk for heat-related illness.

Community and Expert Opinion: Health specialists urge everyone to treat heat dangers with diligence. Too much exposure to extreme heat is potentially harmful and can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Health authorities recommend avoiding being in the sun, in an unventilated room, or a very humid area for long periods, encouraging staying in air-conditioned areas as much as possible, and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Local health officer Dr. Jane Smith said, “Quickly recognizing heat exhaustion, heavy sweating, weakness, and dizziness, and taking immediate steps as needed to cool down are critical if you want to avoid long-term damage.”

East of the Rockies, Maine has the coolest summers of any part of the USA, so heat waves of this intensity are exceptional in Maine. The state has experienced only limited extended heat waves in the past. Residents are well advised to be informed and ready for action. The last major hot spell was several years ago, an event broad enough in warmth to significantly affect health and change the rhythms of daily life.

Maine residents need to get ready for the heatwave coming and most importantly to protect themselves from the possible mishaps that happen during extremely unbearing temperatures. Staying updated on weather and health advisements can assist in reducing exposure to extreme heat.

Stay cool and safe, Maine!
