Representative Lauren Boebert has initiated new legislation aimed at dismantling the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), introducing H.R. 129 as Republicans prepare to assume control of both congressional chambers and the executive branch.

This move represents the latest in a series of Republican efforts to eliminate the agency, following similar initiatives from other GOP lawmakers. Representative Eric Burlison made comparable demands for the agency’s dissolution in November 2024.

During a FOX News appearance on November 25, 2024, Burlison expressed strong criticism of the agency, stating, “For several decades they’ve been a disaster agency [which has] been violating the Second Amendment.”

The ATF’s actions during the Biden administration have included several controversial regulatory measures. These include new restrictions on AR-pistol stabilizer brace owners, regulations requiring background checks for 80 percent complete firearm frames, and new rules affecting private firearm sales, all implemented without congressional approval.

Recent developments saw ATF Director Steven Dettelbach announce his departure, with his resignation scheduled for January 18, 2025, shortly before the presidential transition. This announcement prompted a response from Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, who remarked, “That’s one less person Trump will have to fire after he takes office, and it is one less gun prohibition lobbyist on the government payroll.”
