Willis Asks To Remain On Trump Case

Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis (D) asked to remain on the prosecution of former President Donald Trump after significant criticism of her conduct on the case. The effort to remain on the case came after her alleged affair with Nathan Wade, who she later appointed as a prosecutor on the case, was revealed.

Trump appealed the decision of the judge in the case not to remove Willis after the alleged affair was released. The district attorney argued that Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee’s decision should stand and that there is no need for a further ruling.

According to Willis, the original hearing included enough information to make a decision and she argued that it did not show “any actual conflict of interest and declined to dismiss the indictment.”

Willis was nearly removed from the court case after the alleged affair with Wade was revealed. Both Willis and Wade denied any wrongdoing and that their actions influenced the case against the former president.

The court decision compelled Willis to either leave the case herself or have Wade leave. Following the decision, Wade resigned from his position as special prosecutor.

“The trial court also permitted the prosecution to proceed under the direction of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office upon the withdrawal of Special Assistant District Attorney Nathan Wade,” her legal filing read.

The judge allowed for Trump’s legal team to appeal the decision, reflecting the former president’s attorney’s argument that the alleged relationship created a “appearance of impropriety in this case that cast a pall over these entire proceedings.”

“President Trump and the other unjustly accused defendants have jointly filed a motion requesting the Court to grant a certificate of immediate review of its Order denying their pretrial First Amendment challenges,” said one of Trump’s attorneys.

Trump and his legal team have argued that Willis’ case against him is political in nature and that she showed particularly poor judgement of placing Wade on the case.
