Pro-Palestinian Protesters Picket Oscars

A number of pro-Palestinian protesters protested outside the Oscars this weekend, marking another major protest against the Israeli military campaign against the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The protesters’ calls were partially echoed within the ceremony, where a number of celebrities spoke against the military action.

Protesters picketed the area around the 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. The protesters opposed what they described as “Hollywood’s active support of the U.S.-funded Israeli genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.”

According to local media, the protest around the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue was co-sponsored by a number of pro-Palestinian and left-wing groups, including Black Lives Matter L.A.

The protesters were ordered to disperse by police at around 2:43 p.m.

As the protest occurred outside, the director of a Holocaust film condemned Israel. Jonathan Glazer spoke about his film “The Zone of Interest.”

“All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, not to say look what they did then, but rather look what we do now,” Glazer said. Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present.”

The director said that he and other filmmakers “stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation, which has led to conflict for so many innocent people.”

“Whether the victims of October 7 in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza. All of the victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?” he asked.

The director was not the only celebrity to make similar statements during the event. Singer Billie Eilish called for the end of the Israeli campaign in Gaza.

The protest at the Oscars also came after a number of high-profile demonstrations elsewhere this week. President Joe Biden was late to the State of the Union address last week after pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the road.

In addition, pro-Palestinian demonstrators also protested the opening of a Holocaust Museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
