Jennie Garth expressed her disappointment with the Academy Awards for excluding her late friend and “Beverly Hills, 90210” co-star Shannen Doherty from the 2025 Oscars’ “In Memoriam” tribute.

When approached by TMZ photographers in New York City on Tuesday, Garth didn’t mince words about the oversight. The 52-year-old actress described the exclusion as “messed up” and suggested that an apology from the Academy might be appropriate.

The “In Memoriam” segment, presented by Morgan Freeman at the 97th Academy Awards in Hollywood, honored numerous departed figures from the film industry. However, Doherty wasn’t the only notable absence from the tribute. Viewers also noticed the omission of several other industry figures, including “Gossip Girl” actress Michelle Trachtenberg, Tony Todd, Chance Perdomo, Tony Roberts, Linda Lavin, and Martin Mull.

The Academy has remained silent on these omissions and has not responded to requests for comment regarding the exclusions.

Doherty’s battle with cancer came to an end on July 13, 2024, when she passed away at 53. Her cancer journey began in 2015 with a breast cancer diagnosis, which spread to her lymph nodes the following year. Although she achieved remission in late 2017, the cancer returned in 2020 as stage 4.

“She lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Leslie Sloane said in a statement at the time. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.”

Following Doherty’s passing, Garth shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, celebrating their authentic friendship. “Our connection was real and honest,” she wrote via Instagram shortly after Doherty’s death. “We were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration.”

In her tribute, Garth praised Doherty’s strength of character, describing her as “courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous.” She concluded her memorial post with touching words about her friend’s impact: “I will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie and all the people who loved her.”
