The mother of a convicted Scottish rapist has challenged her son’s transgender identity claims, asserting that biological sex is determined at birth rather than through clothing choices or self-identification.

Janet Bryson, whose son Adam Graham now identifies as Isla Bryson, spoke out against his claims of longstanding gender identity issues. In her conversation with the Sunday Mail, she stated: “My son never expressed any wish that he wanted to be a girl, dressed in any other way or ever asked to be called by any other name than Adam growing up… Never once, at the age of four or at any other age.”

Taking a firm stance on gender identity, Bryson declared: “you have to be born female to be female.” She further emphasized: “No wigs, dresses or amount of make-up makes you female. You can say you’re a woman, but to be female, that is down to biology and how you are born.”

Graham’s case gained significant attention after his initial placement in a women’s prison following his conviction for raping two women, resulting in an eight-year sentence in February of last year. The controversy contributed to political upheaval in Scotland, notably affecting then-First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s position and derailing proposed self-ID legislation that would have allowed individuals over 16 to legally change their gender without formal certification.

Janet Bryson has now aligned herself with For Women Scotland’s legal challenge against Gender Recognition Certificates. The group argues for the recognition of sex as unchangeable in law to protect women-specific rights and privileges. While government lawyers defend the certificates’ validity, even suggesting their application to lesbian groups, the Supreme Court’s ruling on this pivotal case is anticipated early next year.
