Libertarians choose Trump over own candidate for 2024

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire, known for its staunch libertarian principles, has made a surprising decision to endorse former President Donald Trump for the 2024 election, bypassing their own party’s candidate, Chase Oliver.

This unexpected move has raised eyebrows, given Oliver’s progressive libertarian stance on key issues. The LPNH justified their decision by stating, “There is, technically, a Libertarian on the ballot. This Libertarian spends his time supporting tax-funded trans surgery for prisoners, advocating for literal murderers, and trying to kick our members out of the Libertarian Party entirely. We cannot support him, and he cannot win.”

The party acknowledged that endorsing Trump was not a decision made lightly, but they believe it’s the right choice for their state’s future. While admitting Trump isn’t a libertarian, they argue he’s the best option for libertarians in the current political landscape.

The LPNH highlighted several reasons for their endorsement, including Trump’s promise to commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence, his record of starting no new wars, and his potential to appoint libertarian-friendly figures to reduce federal government size. They also praised his proposal to end the Department of Education and his openness to cryptocurrency.

The group drew attention to Rep. Thomas Massie’s recent endorsement of Trump, quoting Massie’s statement: “I want to be part of the alignment that puts the focus back on regular people instead of corporations and bureaucracy. One of the other pressing issues of our day is that our meddling overseas has put us on the brink of war, and I believe Trump is the only one who can pull us back from that. For these reasons and those mentioned in my endorsement, I came to the conclusion that this presidential election is too important for me not to weigh-in on.”

While expressing skepticism about political promises, the LPNH warned of the perceived risks of a Democratic victory in 2024. They stated, “The opposition is at the gates. We must make sure that New Hampshire continues to repel progressives, socialists, communists, and leftists of all stripes.”

The endorsement comes despite New Hampshire’s recent voting history, which has favored Democrats in presidential elections since 2004. Biden won the state by 7% in 2020, while Trump narrowly lost to Clinton in 2016.

This move by the LPNH aligns with other libertarian figures, such as comedian Dave Smith, who have recently announced their support for Trump in the upcoming election.
