Israel Strikes Iranian Base

Israel appeared to launch an airstrike on an Iranian military base near the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facility in Isfahan Thursday into Friday. The operation is likely retaliation for the large barrage of missiles and drones launched by Iran against Israel last weekend.

American officials stated that the strike was likely conducted by Israel. Meanwhile, Israel did not confirm or deny that its forces launched the attack on the Iranian base.

There could be several reasons behind the limited strikes. Some reports indicate that Israel could have launched the attack as a signal that it could reach far into Iran. Other speculation included that Israel launched the attack as a means of testing Iran’s defense capabilities.

The exact nature of the attack still appears unclear. Some reporting indicated that the missiles were likely to have been launched outside of Iranian territory. Another report indicated that they could have been launched from Iraq.

Damage to the base appeared to be severe, although Iran said early Friday that no such attack could be confirmed. The Iranian government said that it had shot down a number of drones above the Isfahan area.

The striking of the base near the nuclear facility could also be linked to the location. There has been substantial speculation that Israel could launch an attack on Iran’s nuclear sites. Both the United States and Israel fear that Iran is attempting to build an atomic bomb.

The Iranian government warned earlier Thursday that it would retaliate against any potential Israeli attack with overwhelming force. However, following the alleged strike in Isfahan on Thursday there was little indication of an immediate Iranian retaliation.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi appeared to not discuss the incident during a speech on Friday. He spoke highly of Iran’s drone and missile strike last week, saying that it “led to authority, unity and cohesion in the country.”

Furthermore, there were reports Friday of a missile strike on a militia group in Iraq with ties to Iran. Both the United States and Israel denied any responsibility for the incident.
