Farmers’ group targeted by police for speaking up

South African authorities have launched a treason investigation targeting four individuals allegedly connected to Afriforum, an organization championing Afrikaner farmers’ rights and interests.

The elite investigative unit known as the Hawks, operating within the South African Police Services (SAPS), initiated the probe following allegations from various South African political parties.

Both Afriforum and the Solidarity trade union, organizations primarily serving the Afrikaner community, have been actively representing their members’ interests not only within South Africa but also in Washington, DC.

Critics of these organizations, particularly those aligned with the ruling African National Congress (ANC), have accused them of stirring opposition from U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently reduced aid to South Africa and other nations.

Despite some government officials acknowledging that these groups are merely exercising their constitutional right to free speech, the radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), under the leadership of Julius Malema, who is known for his anti-white rhetoric, branded their advocacy as “treasonous” last week.

The ANC issued a statement urging South Africans to “to isolate these right-wing races and focus on working together,” notably targeting entire racial groups rather than specific organizations or individuals.

South Africa’s Constitution explicitly protects freedom of expression, with only three exceptions: war propaganda, incitement to immediate violence, and hate speech based on race, ethnicity, gender, or religion that promotes harm. The constitution places no restrictions on international advocacy, which was a cornerstone of the ANC’s activities during its years in exile.
